Sober holidays can be tricky to navigate, especially if you’re used to celebrating with drugs and alcohol.
Whether this Halloween is your first sober holiday or one of many at this point, it’s always good to have some activities up your sleeve that you can be sure will help you have fun and maintain your sobriety.
How to celebrate a Sober Halloween? Here are some sober Halloween activities you’ll definitely want to try for staying sober during the holidays.
8 Ways to Celebrate a Sober Halloween
1. Host a Halloween Party
Did someone say party? Was that someone you? If you host the party, then you make the rules. This will make it easy for you to gather some friends, get dressed up in your best costume, and have a good time – all while staying sober.
Keep the party small and invite fellow sober friends and/or friends that you know will have no problem with a booze-free evening. This can be a rough time of year, especially during early recovery. Having a sober Halloween party with others in recovery can be one hell of a party!
2. Go trick-or-treating
If you have kids, take this opportunity to go trick-or-treating with them and watch their faces light up when they find the house with the king-size candy bars. Trick or treating is one of their favorite holiday events.
Don’t have kids of your own but still want to see the magic of Halloween? Ask a friend or family member if you can tag along in the holiday’s festivities for a night. The kids might even let you have the candy they don’t want. Sounds like a win-win!
3. Have a movie night
Grab some friends, popcorn, and movies to get yourself in the celebrating Halloween spirit. Whether horror movies are your thing or you’re ready to watch Hocus Pocus for the 10th time, there’s nothing better than a scary movie night with friends.
Set up space in your living room surrounded by Halloween decorations or set up a projector in the backyard. Wherever you decide to watch, sit back and enjoy the show.
4. Carve pumpkins
Who doesn’t love a good jack-o-lantern? Grab some pumpkins and the proper supplies and carve some pumpkins to display on your front steps. You can even grab some friends and family and turn it into a contest. Whoever has the best pumpkin carving gets first dibs on the candy!
5. Bake and decorate festive snacks
Whether you choose to bake sugar cookies from scratch or from a can (no judgment), grab the icing and sprinkles and really make it spooky! And you don’t have to stick to just cookies. Try out a number of Halloween-themed treats and see just how creative you can get.
6. Decide for yourself
Did you get invited to a Halloween party that you know you’ll struggle at? If you’re not ready to attend a party that will be serving alcohol, it’s okay to say no! If you think you’ll be okay and still want to go, then that’s okay too.
Set your boundaries and know yourself and when it’s time to go. Bring along a sober friend to go with you, too. This way you know you won’t be the only sober person there and you’ll be able to hold each other accountable.
7. Make things spooky
If you’re the type of person who really leans into the spookiness of Halloween, then go for it. Grab some friends and head to a haunted house, walk through a haunted maze, or if you’re feeling really adventurous, go on a ghost tour.
8. Attend a meeting
Not feeling the Halloween spirit this year? That’s totally okay! Attending a NA/AA meeting or 12-step meeting can be a great way to spend the holiday.
